The Environmental Impact Assessment Draft on how to prevent and solve environmental pollution was deliberated and approved during an executive meeting of the state council held by Premier Wen Jiabao on August 12. Measures to create a low carbon economy to cope with global warming were also discussed in the meeting. It was another step to show the country's determination to develop a green economy since China established its national plan for coping with climate change in June 2007. Delegates at the meeting said creating a low-carbon economy as a new economic growth point would involve widespread changes, including emissions reductions, improvements in energy efficiency, adjustments in energy infrastructure, and launching carbon capture projects that may be a win-win choice for China. These actions will help counter climate change at the same time as promote economic and social progress. The meeting also stressed the importance of global cooperation on developing low carbon techniques and improvements in the laws regarding environmental protection. The draft will be put into practice by the State Council after some revisions. Source: Global Times |
