A strong earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale rocked Wenchuan County of southwest China's Sichuan Province at 2:28 p.m. on May 12th, which caused severe loss of lives and properties of the people there. The Chinese Government and the people are actively conducting the disaster relief work.

Up till the morning of May 13th, the Foreign Ministry has not received any reports of foreigner casualties.
