Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver Hosts Reception and Photo Exhibition to Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Macao's Return to China

On December 20, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Vancouver hosted a Reception and Photo Exhibition to Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Macao's Return to China. 300 guests attended the event including MLA of British Columbia and City Councillor, Consul General of Portugal, Vietnam, Greece, France and other Consular Corps members, President of the Macao Canadian Business Association and the Macao Cultural Association, local Chinese community leaders, and representatives of Chinese invested enterprises and overseas students, etc.

In her speech, Consul General Tong Xiaoling pointed out that in the 20 years since the return of Macao to the motherland, the Special Administrative Region Government and all sectors of society have worked together in its achievement of the best ever development in history. The SAR governance is smooth and effective, the economy has achieved leapfrog development, the society is harmonious and stable, people's livelihood has continued to improve, and international influence has become more prominent, composing a splendid movement about the successful practice of "One Country, Two Systems" with Macao characteristics.

The development of Macao in the past 20 years fully proves that the "One country, Two systems" is the right system with strong vitality that will work, produce results and have people’s support. The fundamental guarantee for the stability and prosperity of Macao lies in the fact that, the Macao SAR Government and all sectors of society fully and accurately understand and agree with the "One country, Two systems" policy, firmly uphold the authority of the Constitution and the Macao Basic Law, truly support the national political system, adhere to the core values of patriotism and love for Macao, maintain close interaction and integration with mainland China. The Macao SAR Government and Macao people have always combined the fate of Macao with the fate of the motherland, given full play to the unique advantages of "One country, Two systems", supported the central government, worked together to press ahead with the stability and long-term development of "One country, Two systems" in Macao.

Consul General Tong pointed out that since Hong Kong returned to the motherland in 1997, under the "One country, Two systems" policy, Hong Kong has also succeeded in maintaining social stability and economic prosperity, has made great progress in various undertakings. But it is heartbroken to see that since June this year, prolonged and escalated street violence has taken place in Hong Kong with the instigation of the opposition parties and the intervention of external forces, which seriously trampled on the rule of law and social order in Hong Kong, challenged the bottom line of the "One country, Two systems" principle. Stopping violence and restoring order is the consensus of all Hong Kong people with insight who love the country and Hong Kong. It is the current priority of Hong Kong.

Consul General Tong emphasized that "One country, Two systems" is a vital system to realize the peaceful reunification of China and a great pioneering work of socialism with Chinese characteristics. As President Xi Jinping emphasized in his speech at the ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Macao's return, with the return of Hong Kong and Macao to the motherland, the handling of affairs in the two SARs is completely China’s internal matter, there is no need for any external force to dictate things to us. The Chinese government and the Chinese people’s will to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests are rock hard. We have all the confidence that the Chinese people including our fellow compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao have the wisdom and ability to better practice and develop the “One country, Two systems”, further improve the institutional arrangements of “One country, Two systems” and achieve more success in the running of the SARs. The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is unstoppable. The common development and prosperity of Hong Kong and Macao together with the mainland of China will have an ever brighter future.

Consul General Tong said that over the years, immigrants from Hong Kong and Macao have been active in all areas in BC while a large number of Canadian citizens work and live in Hong Kong and Macao as well. They have played an important role in the exchange and cooperation between the two sides in the economic, trade, cultural, and educational fields. She thanked them for their efforts to this end, and wished that the cooperation between the two sides will yield more fruitful results.

In his speech, Anthony Remidio, president of the Macao Canadian Business Association, was very pleased to join this event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to China. Over the past 20 years, under the protection of the "One country, Two systems" principle, Macao's social stability and economic prosperity have been preserved and promoted, so is its unique language and culture. The construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will definitely bring more development opportunities to Macao. As an important link connecting Canada with Guangdong and the Macao SAR, Vancouver will also benefit from it. The Macao Canadian Business Association is willing to play an active role in promoting bilateral cooperation and Canada-China relations.

Guests also watched the photo exhibition celebrating the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland. They expressed admiration for the remarkable achievements of the practice of "One country, Two systems" with Macao characteristics, and were fully confident of a better tomorrow for Macao.
