2017/02/09

On Feb. 3, 2017, H.E. LIU Fei, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Vancouver, attended the opening ceremony of the 3rd Spring Festival Temple Fair in Richmond. Hon. Teresa Wat, BC's Minister of International Trade; Mr. Dave S. Hayer, former MLA for Surrey-Tynehead and Mr. James Wang, City Councilor of Burnaby were also among the dignitaries present in the ceremony.

In her opening speech, Consul General LIU pointed out that Canada's three levels of government attached great importance to the first "Spring Festival" since the Federal Parliament passed the motion last June that starting in spring 2017, the Canadian government would proclaim the first day of the Lunar Year as the beginning of the 15-day "Spring Festival". She expressed her appreciation for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's keen participation in the 44th Lunar New Year Parade at Vancouver Chinatown and hoped that Spring Festival celebrations, including the Temple Fair, would further promote Chinese culture and make contribution to Canada's multiculturalism.

Lion dances, martial arts, Chinese dances and a photo exhibition with a theme of "China Stories" were presented at the Temple Fair. The heavy snow didn't impede visitors' enthusiasm for Chinese traditional snacks such as lamb shashlik and special purchases for the Spring Festival.
